Max is Of Counsel to the firm. Max's practice consists of commercial real estate transactional work focusing primarily on representation of private business entities in the purchase, development, leasing and sale of land. In addition, Max represents several Houston companies in corporate and environmental matters. Having practiced law in Houston for over 30 years, Max has had a wide range of experience in commercial and business matters.
Max graduated from Harvard College in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts in History. From 1966 through 1969, he served as an officer in the United States Coast Guard, including tours of duty in Galveston, Texas and the Republic of South Vietnam. Following his military service, Max attended Bates College of Law at the University of Houston and received his Doctor of Jurisprudence, cum laude, in 1972. At the University of Houston, Max was Associate Editor of the Houston Law Review and a member of the Order of Barons.
In 1973, Max joined the Houston office of the international law firm of Bracewell & Patterson (now called Bracewell & Giuliani) as an associate in 1973 and became a partner in 1979. At Bracewell, Max maintained a general business practice with a special focus on real estate, banking, and corporate transactional work. In the late 1980's, he headed a small group within the firm that defended banking clients in lender liability suits.
After leaving Bracewell in 1991, Max returned to the University of Houston Law Center and obtained his LL.M. in Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Law. On September 1, 1992, Max was named General Counsel of Sterling Chemicals, Inc., a publicly held petrochemical company with headquarters in Houston and subsidiary offices in Canada and China. At Sterling, he was responsible for administering all legal affairs of the company, supervising the in-house legal department and coordinating the efforts of outside counsel. Additionally, Max served as a member of the company's senior management committee and as a Vice President and Corporate Secretary of the company.
During his employment at Sterling, Max further expanded his areas of experience to include environmental and employment matters, mergers and acquisitions, and litigation management. In 1997, Max resigned from Sterling to return to private practice. Since then, he has been involved in negotiations for the construction of a chemical plant in China and has represented a number of public and private companies in various corporate and real estate matters. On October 1, 1999, Max joined Eggleston & Briscoe as Of Counsel.
